Synopsis

A portrait of a friendship between two giants of American jazz, Milt Hinton, bass player, and Charles "Honi" Coles, tap dancer. Narrated by Gregory Hines

Narrated by Gregory Hines, "Milt & Honi," is a 97 minute, 16mm feature film documentary starring Milt "The Judge" Hinton, bass player, and Charles "Honi" Coles, tap dancer, two legends of American jazz, who met in the 30's when both were working with Cab Calloway's band. This film is a portrait of their friendship of more than 60 years. Hinton was one of the most widely recorded musicians in history, having recorded with artists such as Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, Aretha Franklin, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Paul McCartney, Coles’ Broadway appearances included "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "Bubblin' Brown Sugar," and a Tony-award performance in "My One and Only.” "Milt & Honi" features rehearsals, practice sessions, historical film footage and photographs including many of Hinton’s famous photographs of major American jazz musicians. Hinton and Coles share reminiscences and insights, including vivid stories of traveling with Cab Calloway's band. The relationship between tap dancing and jazz music is explored when Coles explains the role of tap dancers in the creation of the "bebop" style. Against the backdrop of one of his own dramatic bass solos, Hinton takes us back to his childhood in segregated Vicksburg, Mississippi, and describes his family's "escape" to Chicago in the 1920's. "Milt & Honi" brings the audience behind the scenes in the lives of two innovative world-class performers; pro¬viding a unique opportunity to understand the relationship between jazz music and jazz tap dance and the social and historical context of the development of jazz.
